Music Together NYC is all about making the universal language of music fun! Music Together classes are for everyone – infants, toddlers, preschoolers, AND the grown-ups that love them. Every child is musical and parents/caregivers play a large role in activating a child’s musical development. The classes include everything from rhythmic rhymes to instrument play activities that are appropriate for the children and easy for caregivers, regardless of their own musical ability.
Tell us a bit about your company:
FUN! FABULOUS! UPLIFTING! MAGICAL! These are just a few of the ways that parents describe Music Together®. Each week in Music Together classrooms around the world, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, big kids – and the grownups who love them – gather to make music as a community. Our early childhood music classes give families with children from birth through age 5 the chance to get in touch with their inner musician and connect with other families. We also offer Music classes in Spanish and Mandarin! We’re on a mission to make the world a better place by making it more musical. And you can be part of it by joining one of our music classes in your neighborhood!
Tell us about your team (background, past experience):
Music Together in the City has been building musical communities for over 25 years! The director and staff all share a great love for music and teaching children. They are also professional performers, singers, musicians, dancers, and actors! They bring all of this into the classroom each week!
How and why did you start Music Together in the City?
I was a Mom in the class with my baby daughter and fell in love with the program! I was eager to spread my passion for it and have been doing so ever since.
What do kids learn in your classes and what are the benefits of it?
Music Together® is for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their parents/caregiver. The classes include songs, rhythmic rhymes and movement, and instrument play activities that are developmentally appropriate for the children and easy for parents and caregivers, regardless of their own musical ability. The act of making music encourages important skills such as self regulation, self confidence, leadership skills and social skills.
What is the one lesson you want kids to take away from your classes?
Music is FUN! It is a child’s birthright to participate in musical expression.
Do you have any fun stories about your classes?
I had an experience with a child who never wanted to even enter the class. So the parents and I decided to allow the child to come as close to the door as possible and we (the rest of the class and I) sang her name to her, during our “Hello Everybody” song wherever she was. Sometimes out the window to her while she listened. We did this every week for almost an entire semester. Eventually she would walk right into the class, front and center. Today, almost 10 years later, she is a singer!
What do you like the most about working with children?
I love having the opportunity to watch children experience music for the first time through our program. Hearing children make their first musical singing sounds and rhythmic beats is priceless. I know that I am imparting a love of music that will become the foundation for a lifetime of positive musical enjoyment and expression.
